MUA Exclusive: Expanding Your Makeup Artist Business

Read below to learn more about expanding your makeup artist business from our friends at Elite Beauty Society!

In the beauty biz, it’s not often that MUAs get the floor and get direct attention—sometimes, you get lumped in with the other beauty pros and cosmetologists (not that that’s a bad thing). But this time, this article is exclusively for you!

(Don’t worry nail techs and estheticians, we’ve got exclusive blogs for you, too—check them out here and here).

At EBS, we’re very aware that every beauty career niche is different. We’re also aware that MUAs don’t always get the attention they deserve. So, we’re remedying that. This blog right here is exclusively for you, makeup artists, and it’s entirely dedicated to delivering tips, tricks, and much-desired insight for building and expanding your MUA business.

Look, we know you’re already a badass MUA—you’ve got that part down. But if you’re feeling stumped about how to further your career and boost your MUA business, then honey, you’re in the right place at the right time (finally!)

Keep reading for advice and guidance on how to become an even more in-demand, refined, and business-savvy version of your already professional, must-have MUA self.

Services to Consider Offering

First things first, ask yourself if you’re offering everything that you want to offer. Sometimes, MUAs (and honestly beauty professionals in general) try to niche themselves down too much—in other words, you try to fit your services into a small, tidy box when you could be adding in service you love to offer that might not necessarily fit into that boxed-up version of a niche you’ve got in your mind.

Here are just a few examples:

  • Mobile Makeup Services
  • Freelance Make Up services
  • Face and Body Masks
  • Lash and Brown Tinting
  • Lash and Brow Extensions
  • Lash Lifts
  • Microblading
  • Bridal Makeup
  • Private Makeup Lessons
  • Group Makeup Lessons
  • Bridal Trial Makeup Sessions
  • Brand & Buying Guides
  • Special Event Makeup
  • Hairstyling
  • Airbrush Makeup
  • Creative / Theatrical Makeup Services
  • Spray Tans

Truthfully, the list could go on forever (and ever).

Whether you’re interested in pursuing new licenses in the cosmetology sphere or zeroing in even harder of MUA-specific services, there are a ton of offerings you could add to your selection.

And remember, more diverse services often mean a more diverse client base and that’s a huge reward in itself.

Update Your Services, But Branch Out, Too

Remember all those services we just mentioned above? Yeah—it’s time to add some to your list of offerings. Don’t be afraid to add new, exciting services! We promise you there’s an audience out there—and if you do the research on your target market, we can bet there’s a new service or two that could be a major boon to your audience (and your business).

We always advise that beauty professionals don’t try to do everything all at once—but if you add in few services slowly that are in-demand with your market, you can avoid trying to tack on too much all at once.

Take a look at your current services and see what’s what. Are your current offerings a little dated? Is there anything on your service list you could swap out for a more in-demand service?

Know What’s Hot & What’s Not

The best way to expand your MUA career? Know what’s on-trend at all times.

We’re not advising that you run around like crazy trying to accommodate every new fad, but it does help to keep up with the times in order to stay relevant.

By staying up to date, you’re ensuring that you’re allowing yourself the chance to really capitalize on money-making opportunities, but you’re also making sure you’re hip AF. So, it’s a win-win, right?

Protect Your Career—Always

The last tip we’ll provide you with is this—never leave yourself, your career, or your business vulnerable. In other words, protect what you’ve worked so hard to build with insurance.

Look, we know that you’re thinking that it’s totally typical that an insurance company to try to sell you insurance after you’ve been sucked into an article—and yeah, you’re not wrong, we definitely want you to consider us for your insurance partner. But this is bigger than just winning your business.

Your MUA career is sacred, it’s something you’ve worked hard to establish and we’re not interested in letting all that work disappear because something bad, unlikely, or improbable happened.

Whether you work with Elite Beauty Society for your makeup artist insurance or not, it’s crucial that you’re protected and partnered with a company that’s quality, professional, and has policies unique to MUAs.

Don’t get it twisted—we’d love to have you as one of our members (you better believe we’d protect you and take care of you!). But all we really care about is that you do this thing correctly. We’d hate to see all that hard work disappear!
